I am a professor of philosophy at the University of Sheffield, where I have been teaching since February 2000. I have also taught at the University of Manchester, Hampshire College, London School of Economics, and the University of Hull.
My main research interests are in the philosophy of mind and philosophy of cognitive science. Some of the issues that interest me in these areas are: the nature of concepts, the nativism/empiricism debate, and philosophical methodology.
I am also Director of the Hang Seng Centre for Cognitive Studies, and I directed the AHRC Culture and the Mind project (2006-2012) and the AHRB Innateness and the Structure of the Mind project (2001-2004).
